After watching and listening to ESPN, presidential candidates, friends, family and essentially the entire nation go absolutely apoplectic over the performance of the replacement referees in the National Football League; I realized that there is a bigger lesson to be learned from replacement referees.

You’re always better off going with the pros.

During the final moments of the Monday Night Football game between Seattle and Green Bay, we all saw what happens when you have a well-intentioned, yet inexperienced team of referees get in over their heads. They blew it. There is no question that the final play of that game accelerated the return of the professional officials.

When you trust your on-field product to real professionals who are seasoned and well-trained, the game flows quickly and efficiently. The pros make the right call, and you’re much more inclined to trust what is happening on the field. Everyone senses this, from players to coaches and game-watching fans. The same can be said of business.

A rep who is better educated, more experienced at your type of motion, and empowered to make the right business call at key times of the sale cycle will always perform better. Everyone knows this – the client, the partner and the customer. You need the pros out there, not just an inexpensive alternative.

Due to market pressures, sometimes companies go with a less-experienced, less expensive option. We lose RFPs and the occasional clients to call centers and merchandising firms every now and then. Guess what? We have clients come BACK to us after bad experiences with the “cheaper” option. They come back because they didn’t get the results they were looking for. There is something to be said of a team that employs the highly qualified rather than the highly affordable. We take great pride in the quality of our people, and our clients know this. They know our crew is going to make the right call, day in and day out.

Maybe we should go into the referee business.
